The Beginnings of Lucy’s Whey
I am often asked how I got in to the world of cheese and in particular, Lucy’s Whey. The answer is always a confusing “it was complete serendipity and totally meant to be.” The serendipity is that Lucy’s Whey was started by a friend of mine named Catherine. The “meant to be” is that I grew up in a family where food and making people feel special were always top priorities.
Catherine and I used to sit on the bleachers during our sons’ soccer, volley ball and basketball games, and talk cheese and her plans to open a store. Before I knew what hit me (ha!), we were partners in a store, and now there are two stores that I am the sole owner of. Phew! When I had triplets, I was always told “God wouldn’t give you what you couldn’t handle,” so I guess He was getting worried about me getting bored now that they’re off to school!
My mother was famous for her luncheons and dinner parties, and she was perfect about putting the whole family into service, arranging flowers, cooking, serving, entertaining and making sure every guest was having a blast. Which is why I get such pleasure welcoming every sinlge customer to Lucy’s Whey – it’s in my blood. I love learning about individual tastes and trying to match them to the perfect cheese and I love learning about our farmers and the fabulous cheeses they make and passing on their stories.
So that’s it, totally meant to be serendipity.
